It’s you’ve found yourself on this page, odds are you are interested in building your own lava lamp at home. The lava lamp that I have created is actually a heatless lava lamp and uses a chemical reaction to make the liquid “flow” and rise. It’s actually a pretty cool way to build a lava lamp and it’s really really easy (even I could build it).
Let’s take a look at what you’ll need in order to build your lava lamp. Once you have your materials gathered, click play on the video below and follow along to create your very own lava lamp.
- Clear container
- Vegetable oil
- food coloring
Now that you’ve created your lava lamp, can you think of any other experiments to conduct? Although this is a lava lamp, it is based on the premise of density and using a chemical reaction to create the bubbles.
One thing that my daughter and I were wondering is how long would our lava lamp last? Would we have to add more water to the container to continue the reaction between to the Alka-Selzter and water? Would the oil eventually change color? Could other liquids be used and how would that impact the “flow” of the lava. We were wondering about corn syrup…. Maybe that’s another science experiment in the making!
Glad you stopped by and I hope you had fun with the lava lamp!
